Chinese radicals are the building blocks that hint at meaning, category, and sometimes pronunciation. In this quiz, you’ll train your eye to pick out the correct radical within full characters, not just isolated components.

Each question uses a 4-option multiple-choice format with no timer, making it ideal for careful study or quick review. You can also choose your preferred question count and difficulty before starting, so sessions can be short drills or full-length practice.

Common pitfalls to watch for

Many learners confuse visually similar components (like 氵 vs 水, 扌 vs 手, 艹 vs 草) or mistake a phonetic part for the radical. Another frequent error is forgetting that the radical may be transformed or compressed depending on its position.

How difficulty is balanced

Because the difficulty is mixed, you’ll see a blend of high-frequency radicals and trickier characters where the radical is less obvious. Easier items build confidence, while harder ones push you to recognize variant forms and uncommon placements.

• Look for position clues: left (氵), top (艹), enclosure (囗), or bottom (心/忄 variants)
• Don’t assume the largest part is the radical—some radicals are small but meaningful
• Watch for variant shapes: 忄/心, 礻/示, 饣/食, 钅/金
• If two options seem plausible, ask which part is used for dictionary indexing
• Review mistakes by grouping them by radical to spot patterns faster
